The Segway Navimow is a very clever robot.
Across Auckland it has proven able to conquer complex multi-zone lawn layouts. It can drive between zones with its blades turned off while accessing those access smaller and out-of-way patches of lawn so commonly found in Kiwi gardens.
Let's look at three examples across articles. The first example is a large rural property that has two Navimow units installed. The lawns feature many established trees and garden beds that needed to be marked out as no-go areas. One of the lawns was divided into two separate Zones, so each could be cut at different heights.
The second example is a recently built suburban home in north eastern Auckland on a ~600m2 section that has a very complex lawn layout. Here, just one Navimow is able to mow 7 separate zones (soon to be expanded to 8).
The third example examines areas on these lawns where sight lines to the sky or to the Exact Fusion Location System (EFLS) transmitter were limited or restricted at certain locations and how just well Navimow dealt with these issues. Activating (or adding) VisionFence increases these capabilities further.
EXAMPLE ONE - A large rural homestead near Waimauku, north western Auckland
Our home on our rural property is surrounded by several very large areas of lawns.
Lawn #1 is ~2,000m2 and is a large, flat, irregularly shaped area. There are two large garden beds within the lawn, planted with mature trees and flowering plants.
The Navimow App was used to create a boundary, then to create no-go zones around each of the garden beds. The lawn primarily consists of the kikuyu variety of grass, which is a very tough grass suitable for the Auckland climate on properties where water for sprinklers is not always in abundant supply (we have rainwater tanks). Navimow has no difficulty cutting kikuyu in both dry and rainy conditions - even during summer when its fibres at their toughest.
Lawn #2 consists of two adjacent grassed areas, divided into two Zones. The total area of both Zones together is ~2,000m2.
Zone #1 is part of the immediate grounds of the house, with 8 mature trees. Zone #2 is separated from Zone #1 by a hedge, and this area is adjacent to a horse stables complex. Historically, the grass in Zone #2 has been mowed less closely to the ground, and in winter a couple of areas become very wet because they are part of the drainage system. When winter arrives, two exclusion zones will be added to keep the mower out of the wettest patches of Zone #2.
The Map is set up to mow the entire area at present. By using the Schedule function Zone #1 can be cut at a different height than Zone #2. The bottom-right corner of Zone#2 features a relatively steep area surrounding a drain, and Navimow has no difficulties climbing and mowing the inclines surrounding it.
A Navimow H3000-VF is being used to mow each of these lawns. This model is capable of mowing up to 3,000m2 so is easily able to attend to the ~2,000m2 lawns featured here.
Read about Example 2 in our next article, where a Navimow conquers up to 8 separate zones on a complex suburban property.
